What Is Avatar: The Last Airbender About?

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is an animated fantasy action series hailed as one of the best-animated stories to grace television. The critically acclaimed animated series follows a gang of youngsters on their way to fulfill a prophecy and prevent a cataclysmic event.

The animated series is set in a fictional alternate world inspired by rich Asian aesthetics and culture, where people are blessed with the ability to harness and control air, water, earth, or fire. A being known as the Avatar is the only one capable of harnessing all four elements and bringing balance to the world.

The four elements are divided into nations that coexisted peacefully until the Fire Nation attacked and subjugated the other nations in a prolonged and vicious war.

The series follows Aang, the last Airbender and the latest incarnation of the legendary Avatar. After a century in suspended animation, Katara and her brother Sokka of the water tribe finds and awaken young Aang. After realizing his people’s fate and prophesized destiny, the three set out to help Aang master the four elements just in time for Aang’s duel with the Fire Lord.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” premiered on February 21, 2005, and ran for three seasons until July 19, 2008. The animated epic has 61 episodes which follow a 23-minute runtime per episode.
