What Is Ex Machina About?

“Ex Machina” is a 2014 thriller that follows a programmer named Caleb, who was chosen to meet the CEO of a search engine company. Nathan, the CEO of the company, enlists Caleb’s help in testing his latest creation – Ava, a human-like android with a highly sophisticated A.I.

Nathan tasked Caleb with testing Ava’s consciousness and determining whether or not Ava is truly sentient. Things take a dark turn as Ava slowly reveals the nature of her creator. Caleb must now make a choice on who to trust – his boss, Nathan, or the robot Ava.

“Ex Machina” premiered at BFI Southbank in the United Kingdom on December 16, 2014. The film dropped in theaters on January 21, 2015, though it premiered in the U.S. much later, on April 10, 2015. The film explores artificial consciousness and morality within a short 108-minute runtime.

Who Are in the Cast and Production of Ex Machina?

Acclaimed sci-fi filmmaker Alex Garland wrote and directed the film. Garland is known for writing the beloved post-apocalyptic zombie movie “28 Days Later” and its sequel. Garland recruited the help of Film4 and DNA Films to produce “Ex Machina.” Meanwhile, Universal Pictures International handled the film’s international distribution rights and A24 distributed the film domestically.

The Award-winning sci-fi thriller boasts a stellar cast of actors:

  • Domnhall Gleeson as Caleb Smith
  • Oscar Isaac as Nathan Bateman
  • Alicia Vikander as Ava
  • Sonoya Mizuno as Kyoko

What is the Rating for Ex Machina?

“Ex Machina” is rated 14A. The film contains graphic sexual content and a few bloody, violent action sequences. The film generally has a dreary and serious atmosphere and deals with a complicated and mature subject matter concerning consciousness and identity.

Viewers younger than 14 years old must not watch the film without parental supervision.

How Many People Watch Ex Machina?

While details regarding its actual viewership numbers are scarce, we do know that “Ex Machina” enjoyed modest box office earnings, a positive indication of viewership. The film grossed $25.4 million domestically and $12.8 million internationally, amounting to around $38 million at the worldwide box office.

How Are the Reviews for Ex Machina?

Film critics and sci-fi buffs adored Garland’s “Ex Machina.” Critics praised the film’s smartly written and thought-provoking narrative, calling it one of the best explorations on the issue of artificial intelligence and consciousness. However, some critics took issue with the haphazard and hastily put-together ending.

The sci-fi psychological thriller got a certified fresh score of 92% from Rotten Tomatoes. Take a peek at what critics found so rousing about “Ex Machina” in the following reviews:

  • “Shrewdly imagined and persuasively made, Ex Machina is a spooky piece of speculative fiction that’s completely plausible, capable of both thinking big thoughts and providing pulp thrills. But even saying that doesn’t do this quietly unnerving film full justice.” – Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times
  • “Ex Machina turns out to be far wittier and more sensual than its coolly unblemished exterior implies; it’s a trick that mirrors Ava’s own apparent Turing-test-defying evolution.” – Guy Lodge of Variety
