What Is Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio About?

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” is a dark fantasy stop-motion animated film that retells the story of Pinocchio, based on Carlo Colodi’s novels. The film is a passion project of the celebrated Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who takes charge of revamping the classic story.

Del Toro reworks Pinocchio’s tale and sets the film in a war-torn Italy during the Second World War. Gepetto is a bereaved woodcarver who lost his son 20 years ago in an aerial assault. Unable to cope with the loss of his child, Gepetto creates a wooden boy using the tree planted in his son’s memory.

A mystical being known as the Wood Sprite reanimates the wooden boy as Pinocchio. Gepetto meets the newly-christened Pinocchio and adopts the wooden boy as his own. With Gepetto’s parenting, Pinocchio learns the value of life as an unconventional wooden boy.

Del Toro chronicles Pinocchio’s story within a 117-minute runtime. The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15, 2022. It also had a limited release in theaters in the U.S. on November 2022 before digitally premiering on Netflix on December 9, 2022

Who Are in the Cast and Production of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio?

Del Toro and Mark Gustafson co-directed the film. Del Toro also collaborated with Patrick McHale of “Over the Garden Wall” on the film’s screenplay. Netflix Animation teamed up with four studios to bring Del Toro’s vision to life. Netflix distributed the movie in theaters and on their streaming platform.
