“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” is a dark fantasy stop-motion animated film that retells the story of Pinocchio, based on Carlo Colodi’s novels. The film is a passion project of the celebrated Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who takes charge of revamping the classic story.
Del Toro reworks Pinocchio’s tale and sets the film in a war-torn Italy during the Second World War. Gepetto is a bereaved woodcarver who lost his son 20 years ago in an aerial assault. Unable to cope with the loss of his child, Gepetto creates a wooden boy using the tree planted in his son’s memory.
A mystical being known as the Wood Sprite reanimates the wooden boy as Pinocchio. Gepetto meets the newly-christened Pinocchio and adopts the wooden boy as his own. With Gepetto’s parenting, Pinocchio learns the value of life as an unconventional wooden boy.
Del Toro chronicles Pinocchio’s story within a 117-minute runtime. The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15, 2022. It also had a limited release in theaters in the U.S. on November 2022 before digitally premiering on Netflix on December 9, 2022
