What Is Joker About?
“Joker” takes place in the 1980s in the fictional, crime-infested city of Gotham. The story follows Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill young man from an impoverished background who is always subjected to neglect, abuse, and humiliation. Despite his unfortunate situation, Arthur works hard as a clown-for-hire and aspires to be a stand-up comedian, like the talk show host he strongly admires, Murray Franklin. Though Arthur manages his mental health by seeing a therapist and taking medications, his well-being continues to deteriorate as he faces more rejection and humiliation. He begins to fight back against the society that alienated him, as he leads a chaotic riot that sparks a violent movement among Gotham’s deprived citizens. Murray Franklin, intrigued by Arthur’s chaotic visions, invites him to his late-night show. There, Arthur fully embraces the anarchic persona of the Joker. During the interview, Arthur recounted his troubled past and his descent into madness, while tension rises in Gotham as his volatile behavior takes center stage.
“Joker” hit theaters in October 2019. Its sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” is also underway.
