What Is Joker About?
“Joker” takes place in the 1980s in the fictional, crime-infested city of Gotham. The story follows Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill young man from an impoverished background who is always subjected to neglect, abuse, and humiliation. Despite his unfortunate situation, Arthur works hard as a clown-for-hire and aspires to be a stand-up comedian, like the talk show host he strongly admires, Murray Franklin. Though Arthur manages his mental health by seeing a therapist and taking medications, his well-being continues to deteriorate as he faces more rejection and humiliation. He begins to fight back against the society that alienated him, as he leads a chaotic riot that sparks a violent movement among Gotham’s deprived citizens. Murray Franklin, intrigued by Arthur’s chaotic visions, invites him to his late-night show. There, Arthur fully embraces the anarchic persona of the Joker. During the interview, Arthur recounted his troubled past and his descent into madness, while tension rises in Gotham as his volatile behavior takes center stage.
“Joker” hit theaters in October 2019. Its sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” is also underway.

Joaquin Phoenix’s compelling performance also earned widespread critical acclaim, for which he won the Best Actor award at the 77th Golden Globes.
“Joker” holds an approval score of 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s what critics say about the film:
- “Joker doesn’t understand its representation of violence because it doesn’t know what to do with its politics, opting instead for a confused aestheticization of anarchy, all incendiary chants and masked malcontents thronging the streets.” — Film Comment Magazine
- “Joker is a jumble – sometimes brilliant and sometimes trite. Among its flashes of excellence is a self-serious movie that isn’t nearly as deep as it thinks it is.” — News.com.au
“Joker” is a character study that sheds light on the events that shaped the infamous villain into the symbol of anarchy that he is today. Through Arthur Fleck’s transformation as the Joker, the film boldly explores the consequences of inequality and societal alienation – ultimately revealing the chaos and disorder that neglect can breed.
