What is New Moon About?
“New Moon” is the second film of the Twilight Saga, continuing the love story between the human Bella Swan and the vampire Edward Cullen. When “Twilight,” the first film, ends on a tense note after Bella’s association with the Cullens puts her in a near-death situation, the relationship between the two becomes strained. The theme of Bella’s mortality and Edward’s immortality comes into play, with Edward refusing to change Bella despite it being the logical and safest decision for their love, according to her. Edward also finds it difficult to process the reality that he indirectly put Bella in danger, and since Bella’s safety comes before anything, including their love for each other, he leaves Forks with the other Cullens. He meets Bella for one last goodbye, leaving her stricken with grief when he says he doesn’t love her and that he’s leaving her for good. Bella spirals for months, refusing to eat, socialize, or reach out, but once she realizes that putting herself in dangerous situations makes her see apparitions of Edward, she starts to put her life at risk more often. Under the pretense of ‘getting back out there,’ she starts hanging out with childhood friend Jacob Black, who introduces her to his tribe (of werewolves, as she will soon find out.) Eventually, Bella gets a visit from Alice Cullen, Edward’s sister, her friend, and a vampire who can see glimpses of the future. She tells Bella that Edward is in danger at the hands of the oldest and most ruthless vampire clan, the Volturi, so they travel to Italy to save him. They manage to save Edward just in the nick of time, with the head of the Volturi, Aro, letting them off with a warning. The Cullens then return to Forks and Edward and Bella reignite their relationship, with the former promising the latter to turn her into a vampire once they graduate high school.
“New Moon” was released in 2009 and is based on Stephenie Meyer’s second book of the same name, the second installment in the Twilight series.
