Witness what makes “Nimona” a new and refreshing take on animation that brings fun and heart to a world that doesn’t accept them. Keep reading to find out where you can watch the movie in Canada.

What Is Nimona All About?

“Nimona” starts by introducing audiences to Ballister Boldheart, a commoner who is soon on his way to becoming a knight, the first commoner who will be able to do so. However, during the ceremony, a weapon that is handed to him suddenly fires off a laser that ends up killing Queen Valerin. Ballister ends up getting framed for the queen’s murder and is now pursued by the entire kingdom as a criminal. His actions catch the attention of Nimona, a shapeshifter who decides that she is better off as a villain. Seeing Ballister’s alleged actions as something villainous, Nimona tracks him down and employs herself as his new sidekick. Ballister convinces her that he did not intend what happened but Nimona is driven to be his sidekick regardless so they reach an agreement to work together and find out who the real culprit is.

Who Are in the Cast and Production of Nimona?

“Nimona” was directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. It was written for the screen by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor based on the 2015 graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson. The movie underwent major production changes as it was originally produced under Blue Sky Studios but following its closure, the movie was delayed until it was picked up by Annapurna Pictures which ended up being the main production company that produced the movie with Karen Ryan, Julie Zackary, and Roy Lee as producers. The movie was distributed worldwide by Netflix where the film can be streamed exclusively. It features an exceptional group cast whose performances helped in making the movie come to life including:

  • Chloë Grace Moretz as Nimona
  • Riz Ahmed as Ballister Boldheart
  • Zayaan Kunwar as young Ballister
  • Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin
  • Frances Conroy as The Director
  • Lorraine Toussaint as Queen Valerin
  • Beck Bennett as Sir Thoddeus Sureblade
  • RuPaul Charles as Nate Knight
  • Indya Moore as Alamzapam Davis
  • Julio Torres as Diego the Squire
  • Sarah Sherman as Coriander Cavaverish
  • Karen Ryan as Gloreth
  • Charlotte Aldrich as young Gloreth

What is the Rating for Nimona?

“Nimona” is rated TV-PG which means that younger audiences can watch the movie but there may be scenes that parents may deem to be sensitive for their children. Therefore, parental guidance is advised.

How Many People Watch Nimona?

“Nimona” earned widespread popularity during its release because of how audiences received the film. While Netflix may not provide information on how many watched the movie on their platform, it can be said that the critical success of the movie allowed it to become an immediate hit for fans of animated movies.

How Are the Reviews for Nimona?

“Nimona” is considered a success despite the bumps and hurdles that it faced during its production. The movie was praised for its respectable representation of LGBTQ+ relationships that initially received pushback from its original production company. Many commend the movie for keeping this detail about its main character as it became a positive representation for viewers to see.  The animation was also commended by critics who liked that the style strayed away from what audiences usually see in animated movies. It currently has a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.6/10 rating on IMDb, and a 75/100 score on Metacritic. Additionally, the movie also received impressive reviews saying:

  • From Alison Willmore of Vulture: “What makes Nimona so refreshing is that it doesn’t just plunk these characters onscreen as a contribution to the battered cause of representation — it also has something to say about them and their respective relationships with the status quo. ”
  • From Christian Holub of Entertainment Weekly: “Nimona is an incredibly fun character who is animated very expressively even in her regular human-ish form, and energetically voiced by Moretz, but by the tropes of Arthurian-style romances, she could only be classified as a “monster.” The story admiringly delves into how such monsters are in fact created by a society that refuses to accept their differences.“

The Monsters We Create

“Nimona” beautifully explores the misrepresentation of monsters due to misunderstanding and a lack of acceptance for their differences. Nimona’s desire for companionship and her subsequent betrayal highlight how our actions can push people toward hatred and isolation. Despite her innate goodness, Nimona initially embraces the image others paint of her. Similarly, Ballister, despite his efforts, faces social prejudice due to his commoner status. Both struggle with their identities in a world that rejects them. The film underscores the significance of dismantling prejudices and embracing others for who they truly are.
