What Is Sweet Tooth About?

In “Sweet Tooth,” a catastrophic event called “The Great Crumble” has ravaged the world and turned humans into hybrids: part humans, part animals. Hybrids were believed to be the cause of the spread of the virus, making people fearful and hostile towards them. The story chronicles the life of its protagonist, Gus, a deer-boy hybrid with the antlers and senses of a deer.

For a decade, Gus’ adoptive father sequestered him in safety to protect him from the aggressive survivors of the Crumble. Gus eventually left home to find his mother and met fellow hybrids on his way. As they embarked on a journey to the outside world, Gus and his friends encountered the “Last Men,” a mysterious group that hunts down hybrids and experiments on them.

“Sweet Tooth” made its premiere in June 2021 on Netflix with eight episodes. The much-awaited second season was released on Netflix this week.

Who Are in the Cast and Production of Sweet Tooth?

Beth Schwartz and Jim Mickle directed “Sweet Tooth,” while actors Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey produced in association with Warner Bros. The show is also based on the comic book series of the same name by Jeff Lemire. The main cast of “Sweet Tooth” includes:

  • Christian Convery as Gus
  • Nonso Anozie as Jepperd
  • Will Forte as Richard Fox/Pubba
  • Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Singh
  • Stefania LaVie Owen as Becky
  • Danie Ramirez as Aimee Eden
  • Naledi Murray as Wendy
  • Neil Sandilands as General Abott
  • Marlon Williams as Johnny Abott
  • Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh
  • Christopher Sean Cooper Jr. as Teddy
  • Yonas Kibreab as Finn

How Many People Watch the Sweet Tooth?

Up to 60 million households tuned in to watch “Sweet Tooth’s” first season in 2021 and was viewed for 1.434 billion minutes.

How Are the Reviews for Sweeth Tooth?

“Sweet Tooth” received generally favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike for perfectly balancing the depiction of the innocence of the hybrids and their tragic realities. See what critics love about “Sweet Tooth”:

  • “It’s a brutal post-apocalyptic drama that successfully harnesses the cute innocence of children, but is also a fantasy series grounded in the harshest of truths about what adults can do when times are tough, so it never falls into the trap of making the viewer feel as if nothing is real and nothing really matters. Season two builds skilfully to a showdown with several bravely uncompromising payoffs, delivered in a way that its younger viewers can easily appreciate, not least because it tends to be grownups who meet their fate,” says The Guardian.
  • Decider also said that, “Sweet Tooth” continues to be an engaging and fun story, which is pretty impressive for a show about the human race being quickly wiped out.”
