What is The Black Phone About?
“The Black Phone” is an abduction thriller film that revolves around teenager Finney Blake and his attempt to escape his kidnapper with the use of a rotary phone. The story is set in 1978, when a serial kidnapper and killer, The Grabber, is wreaking havoc on a peaceful neighborhood in Denver. Unfortunately, the Blake siblings – Finney and Gwen – live in this neighborhood with only their alcoholic father to take care of them. As some friends and classmates they know start disappearing one by one, tension starts to rise within their suburb. Eventually, Finney falls victim to The Grabber, getting abducted and taken to a soundproof basement with only a black rotary phone. The phone rings and Finney picks it up, finding out the people on the other line are the spirits of The Grabber’s victims. They try to help him escape the killer’s wrath, offering advice based on their own experiences. In the meantime, Gwen, who gets psychic dreams like her late mother, plays a vital role in trying to find her brother. She enlists the help of Detectives Wright and Miller, and with the efforts of everyone involved, Finney manages to make it out and live the rest of his life.
“The Black Phone” is based on a book of the same name written by Joe Hill. It premiered on September 25, 2021, at Fantastic Fest, and proceeded to be released in theaters in June 2022.
