What Is About The Burial?

Based on real-life events, “The Burial” follows Jeremiah O’Keefe, or Jerry, a funeral home owner who’s been tricked into an expensive business deal with a big corporation called Loewen. On the verge of bankruptcy and desperate to regain his business, Jerry sues Loewen and hires Willie E. Gary, an undefeated and fierce black lawyer from Florida. Gary is also known as “The Giant Killer” for his incredible ability to win cases of injustice and corruption against million-dollar corporations. Together, Jerry and Gary unite to win the case against Loewen. Through Gary’s sharp wits and relentless determination in the courtroom, he successfully puts Loewen out of business and brings justice to Jerry. The unlikely pair earned the respect of each other and remained good friends.

“The Burial” held its premiere at the International Film Festival on September 11, followed by a streaming release on Prime Video on October 6.

Who Are in the Cast and Production of The Burial?

The American filmmaker Maggie Betts directed “The Burial,” based on a New York Times article from 1999. Starring in the film is Jamie Foxx, who’s best known for “Django Unchained,” alongside award-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones from “No Country for Old Men” and “Natural Born Killers.” Here’s the cast of “The Burial”:

How Are the Reviews for The Burial?

“The Burial” resonated well with critics. The show received praise mostly for Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones’ compelling performances, and its underlying themes of racism and injustice.

“The Burial” is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 91% approval rating. Check out what critics are saying about the film:

  • “Foxx is every bit as electrifying as the man he is portraying, whether at the pulpit or addressing the jury, and his fellow Oscar-winner Jones is superb in the quieter role of a decent man who will not allow others to treat him indecently.” – Movie Mom
  • “A nuanced and intelligent legal drama that neatly combines big characters and big ideas. By focusing on wider issues of race and injustice, Betts finds continuing resonance in a case nearly 30 years old.” – Empire Magazine

Exposing Corporate Greed

“The Burial” is a powerful examination of the ruthless schemes of major corporations in exploiting humble businesses. It highlights the extent to which these institutions are willing to go to maximize their profits, leaving people like Jerry — who only wishes to live a comfortable life — in a vulnerable position. The film also instills hope through Gary’s determination to battle corporate greed. His endless pursuit of justice and the enduring bond he shares with people with the same cause show that it’s possible to achieve profound changes.

You can watch “The Burial” on Prime Video in Canada.
