What Is The Little Mermaid About?

“The Little Mermaid” revolves around self-discovery, love, sacrifice, and the pursuit of one’s dreams. Set in a magical underwater kingdom called Atlantica, Ariel is the youngest daughter of King Triton, ruler of the sea. She is a curious and adventurous mermaid fascinated by human culture and the world above the waves. Despite her fascination, her father forbids her from going to the surface, fearing the dangers. Ignoring his warnings, Ariel frequently visits the surface with the help of her friends, a colorful and quirky group of sea creatures, including Flounder, a loyal fish, and Sebastian, a crab, and King Triton’s advisor. During one of her excursions, Ariel saves Prince Eric from a shipwreck and immediately falls in love with him. Determined to be with Eric and live as a human, Ariel seeks the help of the sea witch, Ursula.

Ursula offers to turn Ariel into a human in exchange for her beautiful voice. Ariel agrees to the deal and becomes human, but she has only three days to make Eric fall in love with her and receive true love’s kiss, or she will turn back into a mermaid and belong to Ursula forever. As Ariel navigates her new life as a human with the help of Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle, a comical seagull, she faces challenges, misunderstandings and discovers the importance of communication and honesty in relationships. Eric becomes enchanted by her, but Ursula, who now has Ariel’s voice and takes the form of a beautiful woman named Vanessa, tries to manipulate the prince into marrying her. The story’s climax culminates in a dramatic battle against Ursula, where Ariel and her friends must work together to defeat the cunning sea witch and free the souls she had imprisoned. The film celebrates the triumph of love and courage as Ariel’s selflessness and determination save the day.

“The Little Mermaid” hit theaters in November 1989.
