What Is The Shining About?

“The Shining” follows the Torrance family, Jack, Wendy, and their young son Danny. As they settle into the Overlook Hotel, Danny, who possesses psychic abilities referred to as “The Shining,” started seeing dark visions and terrifying encounters with supernatural entities. Meanwhile, the hotel’s dark forces begin to influence Jack as the winter isolation sets in, making him unhinged and violent towards his family. As the spirits’ influence on Jack intensifies, he becomes hell-bent on terrorizing his family, trapping Wendy and Danny in the haunted hotel, leading to a climactic showdown of terror and violence.

“The Shining” hit theaters on May 23, 1980.

How Are the Reviews for The Shining?

“The Shining” received mixed reviews upon its release. While many were impressed with Kubrick’s haunting direction and imagery, and Nicholson’s unforgettable performance, others found fault in the film’s deviation from the essence of King’s novel that even the author himself was displeased with the adaptation. Over time, however, “The Shining” managed to gain critical success and is now regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time. Viewers and contemporary critics praised Kubrick for the film’s psychological depth and its ability to evoke terror and dread.

“The Shining” received a Certified Fresh approval rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. See what critics say about the film:

  • “As a ghost story and adaptation of the Stephen King novel, it’s largely a failure. On the other hand, as an example of directorial bravura and as a study of madness and the unreliable narrator, it’s a brilliant success.” – ReelViews
  • “Kubrick isn’t out for screams, but he manages to make his movie thoroughly unnerving by keeping the horror so close to home.” – New York Times
