What Is Titanic About?

“Titanic” is based on the tragic 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic, which took the lives of over 1,000 people. The film follows the love story between Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, a fictional couple from different social classes who fell in love with each other as they boarded the colossal, ill-fated ocean liner. As their romance blossoms, Jack and Rose get caught up in the middle of the ship’s perilous collision with an iceberg. The impending disaster challenges the power of Jack and Rose’s love as they face unspeakable obstacles to survive.

The characters in “Titanic” were a mix of fictional and real-life individuals. Jack, Rose, and Caledon are some of the fictional characters in the film, while characters such as Captain Edward John Smith and Wallace Hartley are all real-life historical figures who lost their lives to the tragedy.

“Titanic” hit theaters in December 1997. The film also returned to the big screen for a limited release last February for its 25th anniversary.

Who Are in the Cast and Production of Titanic?

Oscar-winning Canadian director James Cameron, who is also behind the “Avatar” and “Terminator” franchises, helmed, produced, and wrote “Titanic” in association with Paramount Pictures. Cameron is best known for his ability to execute large-scale productions, his meticulous attention to detail, high production standards, and stunning visual effects. The film also features a star-studded cast of talented Hollywood actors, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Kathy Bates, and Frances Fisher. Here’s the main cast of “Titanic”:

  • Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater
  • Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson
  • Billy Zane as Caledon Hockley
  • Frances Fisher as Ruth DeWitt Bukater
  • Gloria Stuart as Rose Dawson Calvert
  • Bill Paxton as Brock Lovett
  • Suzy Amis as Lizzy Calvert
  • Kathy Bates as Margaret “Molly” Brown
  • Victor Garber as Thomas Andrews
  • Bernard Hill as Captain Edward John Smith
  • Jonathan Hyde as J. Bruce Ismay
  • Jonathan Evans-Jones as Wallace Hartley
  • Eric Braeden as John Jacob Astor IV
  • Bernard Fox as Colonel Archibald Gracie IV
  • Michael Ensign as Benjamin Guggenheim

What is the Rating for Titanic?

“Titanic” is rated 14A in Canada for depictions of disaster-related peril and violence, foul language, nudity, and sex.

How Many People Watch Titanic?

“Titanic” was the highest-grossing film of all time for over a decade after its release, until Cameron’s “Avatar” surpassed it in 2009. “Titanic” generated over $2.26 billion at the worldwide box office.

How Are the Reviews for Titanic?

“Titanic” was a commercial and critical success. It was praised mainly because of its high-end production set that created a replica of the ship and the grandeur of the ocean, which were revolutionary at the time. Cameron was also commended for his epic narrative that skillfully weaves together a tragic love story with the historical backdrop of the sinking ship. The film has 11 Academy Awards under its belt, including Best Director and Best Original Song, and holds the record for having the highest number of Oscar wins. The film received an approval rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, 75/100 on Metacritic, and 7.2/10 on IMDb. Here’s what critics say about “Titanic”:

  • “A film that sweeps us away into a world of spectacle, beauty and excitement, a realm of fantasy unimaginable without the movies. – Chicago Tribune
  • “It is flawlessly crafted, intelligently constructed, strongly acted and spellbinding.” – Chicago Sun-Times
