What Is You About?

โ€œYouโ€ chronicles the twisted life of its protagonist, Joe Goldberg, as he travels from city to city to find his true love. Throughout the series, Joe spirals into obsessive behaviors to manipulate his love interests, which always escalate into grisly, murderous situations that force him to move from one city to another to run away from the consequences of his actions.

Joe also narrates the story, in which he presents himself as the victim and justifies his crimes as necessary to protect the people he cares about. His smooth yet disturbing narration gives the viewers a glimpse inside the complex and dangerous mind of a psychopath.

The first season of โ€œYouโ€ premiered in 2018 on the American network Lifetime before the streaming giant acquired the show and gave it a successful run. The two-part fourth season wrapped up in March, while its fifth and final season will air in 2024.

Who Are in the Cast and Production of You?

โ€œYouโ€ is adapted for television based on Caroline Kepnesโ€™ 2014 novel of the same name. Screenwriters Michael Foley and Sera Gamble produced the show, along with Penn Badgley. Each season of the show features recurring cast members, except for Penn Badgley, who plays the central character. Hereโ€™s a list of the main cast for each season:

  • Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg/Jonathan Moore
  • Elizabeth Lail as Guinevere Beck (season 1)
  • Luca Padovan as Paco (season 1)
  • Zach Cherry as Ethan (seasons 1-2)
  • Shay Mitchell as Peach Salinger (season 1)
  • Jonh Stamos as Dr. Nicky (season 1)
  • Victoria Pedretti as Love Quinn (seasons 2-3)
  • Jenna Ortega as Ellie Alves (season 2)
  • James Scully as Forty Quinn (season 2)
  • Carmela Zumbado as Delilah Alves (season 2)
  • Dylan Arnold as Theo Engelson (season 3)
  • Tati Gabrielle as Marienne (season 3)
  • Michaela McManus as Natalie (season 3)
  • Shalita Grant as Sherry (season 3)
  • Charlotte Ritchie as Kate Lockwood (season 4)
  • Tilly Keeper as Lady Phoebe (season 4)
  • Lukas Gage as Adam (season 4)
  • Amy-Leigh Hickman as Nadia (season 4)
  • Ed Speelers as Rhys (season 4)

What is the Rating for You?

โ€œYouโ€ is rated TV-MA in Canada, suggesting that the show is intended for mature audiences only due to its extreme depiction of violence, gore, language, nudity, and sexual content.

How Many People Watch You?

The fourth season of โ€œYouโ€ was viewed for over 92 million hours in its first week of release.

How Are the Reviews for You?

The show received critical acclaim from critics and viewers for its fresh and thrilling plot and Badgleyโ€™s convincing performance as the mentally deranged romantic. The show scored 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, 75/100 on Metacritic, and 7.7/10 on IMDb. See what critics have to say about โ€œYouโ€:

  • USA Today says that โ€œIt’s the perfect violent, depressing antidote to all that holiday cheer. Despite the mostly self-contained story in Season 1, “You” retains its thrills, chills and thoughtful questions about masculinity, abusers, and modern relationships in new episodes.โ€
  • โ€œPenn Badgley remains scary good as Joe Goldberg, bouncing off his wildly talented castmates who are able to disarm and challenge Joe into really looking at who he is and what he has become,โ€ IGN Movies also shared.
